It’s January and the garden is asleep under a not-very-cosy blanket of frost and soggy leaves. A few brave bulbs are poking their noses tentatively above the ground but they’re not planning to move much for the next few weeks - certainly not until I can find some time to clear the borders around them, letting them breathe and see the light a bit better.

I don’t mind the lack of activity too much - it’s too cold and dark much of the time to get anything significant done, and I appreciate the chance to observe the garden without feeling like I need to rush out there and do a dozen different jobs. It’s a time for resting, waiting and planning.

And so it is for this Substack too. I’m going to take the month of January to rest the newsletter, to think about next year’s content and plan how to make Cultivar even better and more enjoyable in the coming months.

See you in the spring! (February counts as spring, right?!)
